Touch and Go

When he touched the flesh of the clam his body jerked. Apparently the clam shut so suddenly he panicked. I watched as he collected himself, and showed him that there was nothing to fear. I caressed the clam’s flesh while he watched in awe. I offered my hand to steady him. He took it. I brought him closer to the clam steadily. He rubbed the clam’s flesh with his other hand. He turned to look at me and I finally saw him. He was but a little boy immensely enjoying the fact that he was where he never should have been.
I left to see what the others were doing.

that was about one of the students i’ve assisted. i will never forget him because i taught him how to touch a clam. on one of the other dives i showed him a mantis shrimp..and he was equally thrilled!
i’m sure he doesn’t know how happy i was to witness that.
