I’m Electric

Metal surfaces at the new office are giving me the crackles. It started innocently enough last Tuesday. Tiny (ignorable) shocks at the first touch. Much like love at first touch..how cute..NOT!

Today I almost dropped my ipod from the shock. The Mister thinks it might be because of my shoes or socks. The area is not carpeted. The fact that there are so many metal surfaces in the office is scaring me silly. I am afraid to touch anything and have since been using my long sleeve to open file drawers and such. :(

How do I fix this? It got so bad today that I heard that electric crackle sound when I brushed against the metal frame of my boss’ glass table. (and it hurt too..)

I wish I could save it in a battery and use it.

  • Ok, here’s my best guess. I reckon it’s the soles of your shoes, so you need to wear shoes that have a sole that will allow you to earth yourself, then the static won’t build up and cause the static charge to arc to other things.

I sympathise though, Mr BC used to have a car that would give me an electric shock every time I touched the door when I opened it to get in. It used to drive me buggy!

    Cheers

  • I wore different shoes every day last week. :( does this mean the one for that really bad day was the worst? They were my favorite. :( The strange thing was, it only happened at the office, and not anywhere else..it’s driving me nuts.

Today is Monday and I have it again. *groan*

  • Hmm…. maybe you’re just allergic to work!

  • An old office of mine used to have that. I can’t open doors or touch computer screens or even accidentally brush against my table because I get these strong static shocks. I can’t even touch (or be in static proximity) some of my officemates, and in the event that I do, a crakling sound accompanied by a bolt of static electricity jolts us both.

It’s the airconditioning that’s causing it. Try fiddling with your AC unit or let fresh air in every now and then. If you can’t fiddle with the AC, before touching anything from wood to aluminum to other people, rub your hands against a sheet of crumpled paper, or use the glass panel when opening doors…never use the handles and knobs.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hey BC,
if it turns out that I am..what then? heehee..it’s already Thursday and I still have it!

    Footsac,
I really hope that works, my boss will think me silly if he sees me rubbing my hands against crumpled paper before coming over to his desk.. :D It would be impossible for me to open doors without touching the knobs though.. :) Thanks.

  • Hey, just found your blog and thought i’d let you know about my new product that i just came out with. Theres nothing else like it on the market right now and i have them all throughout my house and it makes it much easier for me to walk around especially during the winter when i get shocked the most. If you have any questions feel free to email me.
By the beginning of next week you should be able to purchase “zapper stopper” through my website by static off LLC. Just check out the site, and email me if you have any questions or would even like to buy a few switch plates. My name is Shai (purnounced Shy). Hope to hear from you.
